Triumph TR2 versus Austin-Healey
Sir,
I have noted with some interest the correspondence comparing the merits of the TR2 and the Austin-Healey. I myself was placed some months ago with the choice of an Austin-Healey or a TR2 for competition purposes and I finally chose the Austin-Healey on the following grounds :—
1. Both cars have a very similar performance and while the TR2 is a little quicker off the mark the Austin-Healey will catch it higher up in the speed ranges. Both cars have a very similar top speed.
2. With regard to handling, I consider that the Austin-Healey is considerably better than the TR2. While the Healey normally corners neatly the TR2 appears to hop round a bend and then weave its way down the straight. To my personal knowledge at least two Triumphs have overturned at Goodwood and another two at Brands Hatch in the past six months. I have yet to hear of an Austin-Healey doing this.
3. The main point in the Austin-Healey’s favour lies in the fact that while the TR2 has a tuned Vanguard engine, the Austin-Healey’s engine is standard A90. Very little additional tuning can be carried out on the TR2 therefore without impairing its reliability while the power output of the Austin-Healey can be stepped up by another 25 b.h.p. with complete confidence.
It was this last point which finally settled my query in favour of an Austin-Healey, apart from the fact that the Austin-Healey is properly equipped with wire wheels, tonneau cover, heater, etc. I have since had my Healey Le Mans-modified and fitted with high-compression pistons and it is now a much more satisfactory car for racing purposes than any TR2 could possibly be. The TR2 is essentially a rally car, while the Austin-Healey is essentially a circuit-type car.
Thanking you for your excellent publication.
