Thirst for success
That John Watson never won a grand prix for Brabham defies logic, for he was so close so many times. But this missed opportunity really hurt, he tells Adam Cooper…
CITROEN IN UGANDA
• Sir,
I on getting a lot of very pleasant motoring from my Light Fifteen Citroen-t he first saloon car I have ever possessed. These ears are undoubtedly the best of all our British products for sustained passage over East African roads. Proud owners of enormous American ” motor ears” get out of my little Citroen with rather surprised faces and take a quick look at their cinema-organs, a look just a little jaundiced and not quite as proud as before. For the benefit of such people l occasionally show them the Citroen going over heavily corrugated roads at 60 m.p.h. “-bands-off “—not my usual method of driving but something that owners of super-cushion-stream-flo-steering-fitted motor oars have never seen. Citroens are also completely dust-proof.
Why do our British designers call some of their ears ” dust-proof” when they have not even the remotest conception of the depth of dust encountered in dry weather in ” foreign parts ” ? One feels t hat a prototype is taken out over a dusty English country road, or even over a Continental one: it proves satisfactory and down it goes in the eatalogue–” 100 per cent. dust-proof.” Vauxhalls atm! Vanguards are particularly wicked in this respect. The. new Vanguards are ranch better than the old models. but they are still dustbins.
1 nearly broke my neck in Kampala the other day when, passing a garage, I saw what I was convinced was a mirage of a 3-litre Bentley. Glad indeed to find I was not far wrong, and had not got 1).T.s after all. If any oily-fingered type (who doesn’t have that blind faith in the African
” mechanic “) is having any trouble with Citroen shock-absorbers. I think I have found the answer. Messrs. Newton & Bennett were more than kind, and with their assistance I have rebuilt my original shock-absorbers so that at 13,000 miles they are still 100 per cent..—which is inure mileage than usual front, any shocker over these roads. I am, Yours, etc
