Setting the record straight

Over the years the grand prix Eagles have commonly been referred to in the press as Type Ti G, but Dan Gurney insists this was never an official designation. The factory blueprints list the separate Eagle designs more simply. The Fl chassis is labelled Mkl , so the four cars built for AAR’s Formula 1 campaign are correctly known as chassis 101, 102, 103 and 104.

Following this example, the 1966, ’67 and ’68 Indianapolis cars carry Marks 2, 3 and 4, respectively, with Mark 5 Indicating the 1968-69 Formula A Eagle and Mark 6 the 1969 Formula 1 car that was never completed. After 1970, though, with the Formula 1 and Formula A lines discontinued, the naming convention for new Indy Eagles was altered to incorporate the year, with subsequent cars coming from the 7100 Series in 1971, the 7200 Series for 1972, and so forth.
