Which is Fitch?
Sir,
The Watkins Glen article in the February 2002 edition was wonderful and gave the other side of The Pond a view of how great a circuit it really was. Unfortunately, two of the historic pictures were incorrectly captioned.
The photograph at the Old Stone Bridge shows Saxon Marsh in the Altemus Auto Banker leading John Fitch in Briggs Cunningham’s Ferrari 195S. The Altemus was interesting, with rear suspension which canted inward on the corners.
The picture of what you call the ‘first race’ is actually correct, but the caption would lead one to believe it was the main event. The event shown is in fact the Junior Prix, which was a preliminary to the Grand Prix.
