Vaux Unpop?

Sir,

I would like to thank you for adding many thousands of pounds to the value of my humble Vauxhall 20-60 Hurlingham by describing Nigel Irvine’s unique four-seater as a 30-98 in the February issue.

I imagine your mailbag will be groaning with letters from the 30-98 chapter of the VSCC, as the Hurlingham was, I am told, precisely the sort of pseud’s car that caused the VSCC to be formed in the first place. Indeed, I believe many of the ‘boy racer’ jobs were passed off as 30-98s by Wardour Street traders in the early 1950s.

I find my mechanically standard car great fun, and its art deco excesses never fail to cause pleasure to the public — and consternation to VSCC purists. It drives tolerably well, too.

I’m sure Mr Boddy could not have seen the picture before publication, but despite that, I feel he should be made to strike another blow for this underrated style icon by giving the Hurlingham story an airing in a future issue.

I am, Yours etc, Ian Coomber, Felmersham, Bedford
