David and Goliath

I read the article about racing Austins Se with great interest Our Club was founded, following a suggestion in your magazine, by a certain Bill Boddy, to race these wonderful little cars. Today, over 60 years later, we still organise a Championship in which they compete and Bill is our President

I was disappointed, however, that there was no mention of one of the greatest ‘David & Goliath’ stories in motor racing. The story of how one of the ex-works supercharged Sevens, prepared and driven by a team of amateurs, took on the mighty Silver Arrows in the 1937 South African Grand Prix and actually won the 1938 South African Grand Prix. Even more surprising, the driver who masterminded this astounding feat is today fit and well and living in South Africa whilst the car, still as it finished the race, is in Hampshire.
