Reading WB’s fascinating account of Bill Little’s motoring life (MOTOR SPORT, December 1989), I wondered if he had suffered a minor lapse of memory concerning Anthony Howard Piper. It seemed at the time that he may have been referring to my uncle by marriage, Archibald (certainly) Harold (I think!) Piper.

My suspicion was confirmed in the January issue when Peter Piper’s 2.6 6C Alfa Romeo (VNO 323) came into the story. This, in the 1950s, was my first close encounter with an exotic motor car; how could one forget it? I remember particularly my first sight of the expanse of polished aluminium beneath the bonnet, cranking the beast when the battery was flat (one pull over compression was enough, thank goodness) and the double bang (rather like a sonic boom) it emitted at 3000 rpm before taking off in a blare of noise.

Peter Piper and my aunt went their separate ways many years ago and I have not seen him since. If he is still around, I would love to hear from him. And I wonder what became of VNO 323? PETER JONES Bellingdon, Bucks
