Good Torch

A dependable electric torch is an essential part of the car-user’s equipment, especially during the dark days of winter (you can say that again, in 1979) and on night-rallies, etc. For a long time I have found the best torch to be a Bardic. I have also had good service from an Everready Motomate II, which is less of a hand torch, and useful in the house.

Another very good hand-torch is now available from Textile Mouldings Ltd., PO Box 22, Temlon Works, Exchange Street, Accrington, BB5 OLA. It is a waterproofed, shock-resistant right-angled torch made for some years for the Ministry of Defence for use in the three Armed Services. Defence Forces overseas and Police and Fire Services in the UK also use them. This torch is light-to-hold and extraordinarily strong, the NATO specifications calling for its polycarbonate lens to withstand the torch being dropped onto concrete, and it is claimed that a hammer can be beaten into the body of the torch without damage to this lens. It can be used in all climates, weighs only 300 grammes (10 oz.) with batteries, two spare bulbs are carried in the base-cap, and the torch-body has a clip, enabling it to be attached to belt or breast-pocket, so leaving the hands free – useful when that lead-lamp fails. The 3-position switch gives a signalling or a steady beam, and the case is available in non-reflecting olive-drab as used by the Armed Services or in visible golden yellow as used by the Royal Navy and Fleet Air Arm. A light-filter adaptor is available for the lens, giving three colour alternatives. The body and caps of this torch are of high-density polythene, the clip is of phosphor-bronze, and the external metal fittings are chemically treated, in matt black; the torch is waterproof, as neoprene-synthetic rubber seals are fitted at all joints.

Previously unobtainable by the public, we thought you might like to know that this THL torch, although not yet in the shops, can be obtained direct from the makers, for £2.70, inclusive of VAT and postage charges in this country. – W. B.
