In the driest Monte-Carlo Rally on record, with but a mile or two of ice or snow in the whole distance, a trio of Lancia Stratos led by that of Sandro Munari (top) had no trouble staying at the head of the field. Highest placed saloon car was the Opel Kadett GTE of Walter Rohrl (centre) which was fourth, just ahead of the Ford Escort RS driven by Roger Clark. On an isolated icy hill cars without studded tyres which didn’t get a good run at it from the bottom wheelspun to a stop and had to be pushed, like the Autobianchi in the bottom picture.
