While the four Type 59 Bugatties were being raced by their English owners in 1935, as described in the centre-spread story in this issue, the Molsheim factory were still doing development work and entered this 3.8-litre version in the French GP at Montlhery. It had a new type of radiator matrix and a cowling in place of the horseshoe shape, and the oil cooler was moved from the chassis side-member to the top of the scuttle, by the aeroscreen. It was a last minute hastily-prepared effort and when the bonnet flew off and could not be refitted, Robert Benoist had to continue without it, to the displeasure of the partisan French crowd.
