"The '70 limit' is senseless"
Sir,
I agree with all you say in “Matters of Moment” February 1973, especially the “sneaky” radar traps which are placed on quiet roads so the police have a chance to stop vehicles, not on the “race-track” roads which are heavily trafficked.
I was myself “done” on Queens Drive, Liverpool on a Saturday morning, with no traffic to speak of, in dry, clear conditions doing 44 m.p.h. when that stretch of road was a 30 limit. It is now a 40 limit having been uprated about six months after my “offence”.
The “70 limit” is senseless, as evidenced by the enforced convoys on motorways.
Driving in the recent fogs in Lancashire I was amazed at the miniscule rear lights on most commercial vehicles—artic. trailers in particular. Budding rally drivers could practise on the skid-pans made by the droppings from soil carrying trucks—better clobber these operators than the motorists.
I drive 20,000 miles a year, business and pleasure, in a company 1100 Escort, the latest version having some welcome refinements but the handbook no longer has a wiring diagram!
I am a member of Wirral 100 MC and enjoy marshalling at motorcycle road and sand races.
Three cheers for D.S.J. and his statement that motoring can be fun. MOTOR SPORT is worth 15 pence just for his comments; the rest is a welcome bonus. [Thanks!—ED.]
Keep up the good. work. Rhubarb to the AA and RAC.
Ormskirk.
