Dazzle

Sir,

With increasing popularity of square or rectangular headlights amongst designers of popular cars it is becoming apparent that a much higher proportion of these shaped lights cause dazzle to oncoming cars than the conventional circular variety.

I can’t imagine that these lights are more efficient optically than circular lights and it would be interesting to have other readers views and perhaps also those of experts. Do they have advantages or are they merely a styling gimmick?
