The Things They Say...
“The Triumph 1300 . . stands alone as the best small car currently available.”-The Autocar dated February 4th.
“… you can hear a pin drop in the Triumph 2000-at 70 m.p.h.” -a Standard-Triumph advertisement in the Sunday Times Magazine for February 5th.-Good cars, undoubtedly, but should one gild refined gold ?
Apparently an accurate statement, a pin being dropped into the car’s ash-tray and the sound level recorded on an acoustical level graph, using a Shure Unidyne Ill microphone. EMI. Type L4 tape recorder, Bruel & Kjaer 2112 analyser and a Brod & Kjaer 2305 high-speed level recorder!
“I have just tested by far the most magnificent car I have ever driven . . and it’s German. My creed, and it has always been thoroughly justified, is that anything they can do we can do better. But if I were an ostrich not all the sand in the world could let me escape the fact that the Mercedes 600 is absolutely superb. It is going to take an awful lot of miles driving the new Rolls to get the nasty taste out of my mouth. . . . There are many people who can’t, or won’t, buy a foreign car, but I hope, with all my heart, that our own makers realise that this ready-made feather bed market and charging two guineas for an owner’s handbook is no substitute at all for a car as fine as this 600” -Robert Glenton, reporting on the Mercedes-Benz in The Sunday Express of January 23rd.
