Memories of Jack Warner

I was interested to read of Mr. Jack Warner’s (H.J. Waters) autobiography in Womans Own. In particular, I was pleased to see he mentioned driving King George V and Queen Mary to Cambridge in a Sizaire-Berwick. The occasion was the opening of the Botany School in 1921. Shortly after the journey the car was bought by Professor James Ashworth, who at the time was Head of this Department of the University of Edinburgh. Professor Ashworth used the car until he died in office in 1927.

I enclose a copy of a photograph of King George and Queen Mary arriving at Cambridge, with Mr. Warner at the wheel. The original photograph was given to me by Professor Ashworth’s widow in 1960. She died a few months ago at the age of 92. I learnt from her that about 1936 the car was bought by a senior member of an Edinburgh firm of manufacturing chemists. Professor Ashworth’s batman of the 1914-18 war, who was a laboratory attendant here, told me that he thought the car was converted into a commercial vehicle during the Second World War.
