Pit stop competition at the Racing Car Show

A novel competition was staged last week at the Racing Car Show organised by The Ford Times. Eight racing teams, each made up of three mechanics, were competing in a pit stop procedure at speed on an A.C. Cobra supplied by John Willment Racing. The competition, held in the restricted space of The Ford Times stand, involved changing both front Goodyear Blue Streak racing tyres, filling the tank with eight gallons of petrol (in fact, water was used), cleaning the windscreen, and checking the water and oil. All the teams had four runs. The winning team was Coombs of Guildford. Their best time on the four runs was 30.82 sec. Second was Alan Mann Racing Ltd. (31.09); third, John Willment Racing (31.28 sec.), and fourth, Super Speed (32.49 sec.). First prize to the winners was the Autolite Trophy and three tankards for the mechanics. Graham Hill received it on behalf of Coombs from Mr. Bryce Russell of Autolite.
