In our January issue, reviewing a clever German working replica of the Jaguar XK120 fixed-head coupe, we asked when the British toy industry would turn its attention to realistic motor-car miniatures.
We now learn that a constructional kit for making a non-working replica of a 1903 Darracq two-seater, based on “Genevieve,” is available from a London firm. The finished model is complete with imitation road springs, brass lamps, two spare tyres, hand-brake, bulb-horn, bucket seats, starting-handle, back axle and propeller shaft, crankcase and silencer. The parts are of metal, forming a proper chassis, which can be assembled by the novice with bostik or a similar adhesive, or by the more experienced model-maker with solder. The latter would probably add pedals, steering-column gear-lever, etc. The completed car looks exceedingly handsome; it measures 41 in. long and weighs 101 oz. The spoked road wheels revolve but the steering is fixed. The number plate carries the three-letter registration of the “Genevieve” prototype.
The kits cost 21s. each. Assembled models are also available, painted to customers’ requirements and mounted on a wooden plinth, for 65s. each. This veteran Darracq replica is available from most good toyshops and details of where to obtain it can be had from the makers, Exakta Casting Co. (London) Ltd., 233/235, Pentonville Road, London, N.1.
They are already contemplating similar replicas of a Stanley steamer and the 1907 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost.–W. B.
Good News
The B.A.R.C. will revive its Nine Hour Sports-Car Race this year at Goodwood. “Le Mans” in Sussex will take place on August 20th.
Le Mans Excursion
A series of Le Mans excursions are being organised by H.Clarkson Limited, 9/10, Fenchurch Street, London, E.C.3 (Mansion House 0031). These include air and coach return journeys for £15, leaving Waterloo on June 11th and returning on June 12th, entry to the tribunes being bookable at £1 15s. extra or a seat in the covered grandstand for £4 extra. The aircraft will be Transair twin-engined Dakotas. Another air excursion will leave London on June 10th, returning on June 13th, at a cost of £14 return, inclusive of coach to Croydon airport, luncheon and refreshment boxes, etc. Passports and insurance can be arranged.
In addition, a coach journey is being arranged, from June 10th to 13th, with overnight stops at Chartres and Dieppe, costing £14 exclusive of the above circuit bookings. The two nights’ accommodation with all meals is an optional extra at £7 per head. An air excursion from Birmingham is available for £17 return.
