A RETURN TO THE REAL THING?
The 1k-litre H.R.G. is now in production at the Tolworth works. Backed by H. R. Godfrey (the ” G “of G.N. fame), the H.R.G. appears to represent an honest attempt to offer a modern version of the real -enthusiast’s motor-car. A 69×100 mm., four-cylinder, twin-carburetter, push-rod o.h.v. Meadows engine is used, with 7 to I compression-ratio largeclearance pistons and hand control of the magneto ignition. The four-speed gearbox has a silent third but no synchromesh, and is controlled by a tiny remote central lever. Final drive is by shaft, and the front suspension is quarter reminiscent of Frazer-Nash practice. The brakes can be adjusted while the car is in motion, the magnesiumalloy drums have aluminium. back-plates and deep stiffening webs, and the handlever has ratchet or racing fly-off action at the driver’s choice, control being by means of a swivelling grip. The H.R.G. pulls a 4 to I top gear, weighs just over 14 cwt., and is claimed to exceed 85 m.p.h. The steering :asks 1 turns, lock to lock. The fuel tank gives a range of approximately 4.20 miles. The makers have made use of an original test to emphasise the light weight of the car, claiming that 0-60-0 m.p.h. occupies a time of 19 secs. This is certainly a far better figure than that taken by many sports-cars to reach 60 m.p.h., without a braking period, The H.R.G. has a crab-track of three Inches, and its equipment is simple and effective. The front axle is a tubular beam, the head-lamps are high set, the
screen folds flat without preventing the bonnet being opened, the radiator is unashamedly naked, and there is ample luggage accommodation. The two-seater iS priced at 1395, commands a tax of A’.9 per annum, and is claimed to give approximately 30 m.p.g. We look forward to carrying out a full road-test of one of these cars in the near future. In the meantime details can be had from the following address on mentioning MOTOR SPORT :—H.R.G.
