BRITISH cars showed up well against their continental rivals at the Mont des Mules hill climb, the last ur the eirents in connection with the Monte Carlo Rally.

The hill has a average gradient of about 1 in 12, is three kilometres in length and includes many dangerous bends. British cars won every class in which they competed, and. in each case broke the existing record. Only one category, for cars up to 8000 c.c., went to a foreigner. The winners in each class were as follows : 750 c.c., J. W. Wright (M .G.), 50.18 k.p.h. ; 1100 c.c., C. R. Whitcroft (Riley), 53.25 k.p.h.; 1500 c.c., N. Black (M.G.), 51.42 k.p.h.; 2000 c.c., T. C. Mann (Idagonda), 50.51 k.p.h.; 3000 c.c., H. Widengren (Alvis), 51.67 k.p.h.; 5000 c.c., D. M. Healey (Invicta), 55.44 k.p.h.; 8000 c.c., Prince Djordjadze (MercedesBenz), 60.2 k.p.h. The high speeds ob

tained in the three smaller classes are particularly noteworthy.

REPRESENTATIONS were recently made by the Automobile Association to the Ministry of Transport in the interests of motorists who have laid up their cars, but propose using them during the Easter Holidays.

As Good Friday coincided, with the first day (March 25th) of the new licensing quarter, in the absence of an Amending regulation motorists who had not licenstd their cars this year would have been prevented from taking the road before Good Friday itself. The A.A. is now informed that to Meet this difficulty motorists will be able to take out their licen.ces from the 23rd March instead of the 25th March on payment of a special additional duty. The licences will be issued for the periods : (a) March 23rd to June 30th or—

(b) March 23rd to December 31st inclusive. The additional duties payable will be :

Motor vehicles taxed annually at £30 or over, 10/-. Motor vehicles taxed annually at less than £30, 5/-. Motor Cycles, 2/6.

Motorists who do not wish to use their cars until Good. Friday will still be able to obtain their licences at the rates previously existing.

MOTOR SHOW AT JOHANNESBURG.

CONSIGNMENT of Humber and Hillman cars have been sent

from England for the exhibition at the Witwatersrand Motor Show, to be held at Johannesburg commencing 21st of this month. This is a very important event in South African motoring circles and good results are anticipated by the British manufacturers, whose products are already in public favour.
