You Were There Special
If the name sounds slightly familiar, it should. In August 2014 Motor Sport published some of Bryan Watson’s candid images from the 1978 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch – and we felt the time was ripe to present a second selection, such was the breadth of options he put at our disposal.
To recap, Bryan was an accredited sports photographer in the States and used contacts, including Tom Binford (Indy 500 chief steward from 1974-95 and one-time president of the Indiana Pacers basketball team), to help secure a media pass in Kent. The race coincided with a visit to see UK-based relatives.
The shots were all taken on Kodak transparency film, using a Pentax MX and a range of prime lenses. As he told us in 2014, “I could not believe I was having this experience and kept wondering when I was going to wake up…”
