Hillclimb history

Sir,

I have just received the May issue of Motor Sport. Good as ever, and the iPad facility is a really excellent innovation. Could I correct a couple of errors in your Race Retro report? Peter Lawson (not Lawton) won the British Hill Climb Championship only once, in 1968. Tony Marsh had won it for the sixth time in 1967. Lawson used the 4WD BRM P67 with 2.1-litre V8 which had briefly and unsuccessfully raced in F1 as a factory car. Lawson won 11 rounds out of 13, a dominating performance with six records for good measure.

He sold the car in 1969 to John Cussins who did not get on well with it and had a huge crash at Prescott. The next year Cussins exchanged the remains with Roy Lane, taking Roy’s TechCraft Buick in its place. Roy subsequently installed the engine and transmission system into a new TechCraft chassis to create the TechCraft BRM. Another example of Roy’s engineering skill, which, combined with his remarkable driving ability, was to bring him four championships in subsequent years.
