Sir, I have just read about Alan Mann’s death, and I would ask you to pass on my condolences to his family and friends. I never had a great association with him — our only race together was, I think, the Liege marathon at the Nürburgring in 1966. (The car broke when leading after 76 hours; not his fault, it was the engine which came from Lotus.)

We worked together a couple of times on Ford rally recce and test programs and I always had a great respect and liking for him. The last time I saw him was at the Goodwood Festival of Speed a few years ago when, although I had not seen him, he came running after me to say hello.
