It would be a strict minimalist who binned all his tickets, programmes, passes and notebooks after each race he’d attended. Luckily Nigel has always had a historian’s mind, so when we asked for personal material to illustrate his first year of El reportage, he was able to produce relics from the Spanish GP which was his rookie job. After he’d dug down through 40 years of memorabilia, of course.

Gary Watkins
A career spent reporting on international sports car racing means that Gary hasn’t celebrated his mid-June birthday since 1990. Or not properly, anyway. The fear that if he does so he will age 20 years in one fell swoop, in the manner of Dorian Gray, keeps him going back to the Le Mans 24 Hours every year. One problem: this year’s race doesn’t clash with his birthday. Will he age overnight?

Ever YouTubed on-bike footage round the Paris Peripherique? It’s not a patch on Ed’s scooter blast to City Airport… But it was his ‘sensible’ transport Lance the Lotus which took him to Gaydon to peer under the new Aston Le Mans racer’s skirts.

Mike’s many years in and around the Grand Prix world as a reporter (beginning with our one-time sister paper Motoring News) stretches back to when drivers had time to spend with the press and weren’t so worried about being ‘on message’. Mike considered Elio de Angelis a friend, which gives his recollections of this cultured and charming Italian a uniquely personal quality.
