John Ure defies age gap at Vintage Season-opener
John Ure was one of the stars of the VSCC’s Spring Start meeting, wrestling ERA R9B to victory in the Patrick Lindsay Memorial race and taking a bold fight to Philip Walker’s Lotus 16 in the Amschel Rothschild Memorial event.
The versatile Julian Bronson, aboard R1A, pushed Ure throughout the Lindsay event, which was sadly missing Ludovic Lindsay after his ERA ran a bearing in practice. Ure came close to pulling off a major upset in the Rothschild race, charging across the line just a fifth of a second adrift of Walker’s much newer Lotus.
The two-day meeting, jointly hosted with the BRDC, featured a bumper field for the opening two rounds of the club’s Historic Sports Car Championship. Nick Linney oversteered his Lister Jaguar to victory on day one, but Frank Sytner’s Cooper Monaco was refettled for Sunday’s race and outpaced John Harper’s similar car.
