Ladies first - and third

Here are brief details, from Paul Sheldon’s invaluable Record of Grand Prix and Voiturette Racing, of three women drivers who won races, or scored class wins, against fields no worse than those in the Aurora F1 Championship:

1. Janine Jennky won the 1928 Formula Libre Coupe de Bourgogne, a four-hours duration race, against a field that included Chiron. She had also finished third in the 1927 Grand Prix de La Baule.

2. The Voiturette section of the same race was won by Lucy O’Reilly Schell, mother of Harry Schell.

3. Anne-Cecille Rose-Itier won two of the many voiturette races she started in the early ’30s, the 1932 Trophee de Provence and the 1933 Grand Prix de Picardie. Mr Sheldon states that she used to “do odd things with fans in nightclubs in Paris”.
