Who's a jolly good fellows?
Sir,
Following the success of my Auto Union Album, Neil Corner has asked me to prepare a similar book of photographs by Robert Fellows, whose pre-war race negatives Neil owns.
Fellows was a gifted photographer and a friend of both Dick Seaman and Rodney Walkerley (‘Grande Vitesse’ of The Motor). In 1948 Walkerley published a slim volume called Grands Prix 1934-1939, with photographs by Fellows who, sadly, did not live to see it published. As Walkerley recalled in his Foreword, in December 1945, his friend died of wounds received at El Alamein.
And that, at the moment, is all I know of him. He seems to have been a man of independent means, able to travel throughout Europe to some circuits as far afield as Reims, Monza and Pescara in some style, for among his pictures are those of the cars he used, including an Alfa Romeo, an SS Jaguar, a Lagonda and a Packard drophead coupe – hardly your run of the mill transport.
If any reader has information about Fellows’ brief life I will be most grateful.
I am, yours, etc. Chris Nixon, 23 Cambridge Road East, East Twickenham, Middlesex TW1 2HN
