WITH THE impressive new pit facility providing a backdrop to the massed field, Arnoux’s Renault leads into the first corner ahead of Rosberg’s new Williams FW08, Prost’s Renault and Lauda’s McLaren. Below Rosberg did the lion’s share of the leading in the debutant Williams, but lost the lead to Watson with just over a lap to go.

JOHN WATSON drove a steady, well-judged race at Zolder, benefiting from the relatively hard compound Michelin tyres on his McLaren MP4 and surging into the lead on the penultimate lap after closing in relentlessly on Rosberg’s tyre-troubled Williams. Left, Irishman Derek Daly drove his first race for Williams at the wheel of the second FW08 but spun off in the closing stages under pressure from Cheever’s Talbot which can be seen closing in on the Irishman. Bottom, Nelson Piquet’s Brabham-BMW BT50 is harried mercilessly by the Talbots of Laffite and Cheever before both French cars got ahead of the World Champion.
