Badge engineering

Sir,

The introduction of a Metro bearing the MG badge will be met with sadness and not a little anger by many with feeling for the marque. True that the first MGs were no more than special versions of an early Morris produced by Kimber in a little workshop, and so the new “MG Metro” could be said to be continuing that tradition, however, the key point of that MG tradition is that the cars were made by a separate workforce on a separate site. To stick a few badges on the occasional car as it comes off the production line does not make it an MG. The very name “Morris Garages” implies that the cars have a distant origin. BL are simply prostituting the name.
