Silverstone Six Hours in Colour
Jochen Mass (above) had everything going for him at the Silverstone Six Hours. He shared the fabulous Joest Racing Porsche 908/80 with Reinhold Joest and Volkert Merl, and started the race from a confident pole position, only to crash at Woodcote.

One man lured by the ‘Le Mans practice’ was World Rally Champion Walter Rohrl, who shared the Vegla Racing 935 turbo (far left), with Harald Grohs/Dieter Schornstein, and ended up on the victors’ rostrum. Brute engine power wasn’t everything, as a flamboyant Derek Bell (top, right) illustrated by taking the Bell/David Hobbs/Steve O’Rourke Gp5 BMW M1 to a heroic second place. Less fortunate were Adrian Yates-Smith/Preston Henn (left), whose IMSA 935 K3 retired after walloping the armco barriers for a second time. Lella Lombardi/Giorgio Francia (top left dicing with Richard Cleare’s 934) again indulged in some Giant-Killing to bring their 2-litre Osella PA9 home fourth. Bottom, Monza winner Edgar Doeren chases the similar 935 turbo of Christian Bussi through the drying Woodcote chicane on his way to fifth place.
