Winding wheels

Sir,

I was surprised and delighted to see “one of our wheels” featured in your “Parry Thomas” Day, May issue. I thought you might like to know that the wheel is one of the two winding wheels formerly at Gresford Colliery (now closed), near Wrexham, being the one at the top of the Martin Shaft. Gresford Colliery had one of the worst disasters in the history of coal mining in the UK, when in 1934 262 men were killed below ground. Our wheel was re-erected by tour local unemployed young boys and a supervisor on a Job Creation Programme and we are all very proud of it.

I have read your publication for many years and thoroughly enjoy it. I do not share your seemingly acute obsession with a certain German made motor but I am keen on another. My two motoring mad moments were, one to sell a 1964 Porsche 356C in 1971 for £450, the other to buy a Triumph Stag which developed serious crankshaft problems at 3,000 miles. Currently I run a Peugeot 504 Family Estate Automatic although we do have a “quickie” by way of a Dolomite Sprint which has given no trouble at all since we had it In 1974, and an ever reliable Morris 1000. Why don’t BL make it again, especially the Traveller.
