That race to London
Sir,
In the Manchester-London “race” the other car was a Willys Overland model driven by Harry Whitehead of Whitehead and Furness Motors, Dukinfield near Manchester. He was a most competent driver and engineer (his workshop was immaculate) and no mean salesman. His sales dictum was “if you are demonstrating an American car let the customer drive it; if an English car, drive it yourself”. I believe there was a fiver at stake in the Essex-Willys contest and that Whitehead gained his revenge in a later meeting.
