MOTOR SPORT Brooklands Trophy

As announced briefly last month, the Trustees of the MOTOR SPORT Brooklands Fund have presented to the B.A.R.C. the Brooklands Memorial Challenge Trophy and replica and a cash prize of £50, to be awarded to the driver making the best aggregate performance in this year’s B.A.R.C. Members’ Meetings.

The idea of a Fund for the purpose of perpetuating the memory of the late Mr. H. F. Locke King, who built Brooklands Track in 1906-7, originated in the mind of W. Boddy, the editor of MOTOR SPORT, and author of “The Story of Brooklands,” and was announced in MOTOR SPORT for April, 1947.

The original intention was to endow a hospital bed or erect a memorial plaque in the name of Brooklands, but nationalisation of the hospitals put paid to the former scheme, and with the British Automobile Racing Club’s avowed intention of carrying on in the tradition of the old B.A.R.C. it was thought that Mr. Locke King’s memory could best be perpetuated by presenting a Trophy to be contested annually by amateur drivers in Brooklands-style races.

At a meeting last April, attended by W. J. Tee and W. Boddy for MOTOR SPORT, J. A. Masters, one of the Fund Trustees, John Morgan, Secretary of the B.A.R.C., and S. Sedgwick, President of the Bentley D.C., the B.A.R.C. accepted the Brooklands Memorial Challenge Trophy and replica to be purchased by the Fund. MOTOR SPORT further agreed to give a cash prize of £50 to the Trophy winner. A marking system has been devised for the purpose of ascertaining the best performance at this year’s B.A.R.C. Members’ meetings, as follows :

The winner or a race will receive 4 points, second 3, third 2, fourth 1. If there are seven or fewer starters the points will be halved. The competitor with the highest number of points after the three meetings will be adjudged the winner. The first meeting took place at Goodwood on April 6th and is reported elsewhere. The position in the Brooklands Memorial Trophy contest to date is :
