MORE RECORDS FOR ” BABS.”

Further to the remarkable speeds put up by Mr. J. G. P. Thomas at Pendine, we have to report new short distance records established by this driver ac Brooklands on May 26th. With the 27 litre ” Babs,” Mr. Thomas covered the standing kilometre and standing mile at 86.9 m.p.h. and 98.87 m.p.h. respectively over both ways of the course. On the same day, driving the Leyland-Thomas, he broke the world’s record in Class B for 5 kilometres at a speed of 128.41 m.p.h.

The Sunbeam company are evidently not content to leave the world’s speed record in the hands of Mr. Thomas, their latest venture being a 44 litre giant, propelled by two 12cylinder Sunbeam Matabele engines, one in front of the seat and one behind, coupled together by a shaft and driving the rear wheels through the medium of gear-boxes, clutches, cross shafts and chains. For the interest of the amateur who does his own tinkering we should like to draw attention to the fact that this car has 96 valves to be ground in, 48 sparking plugs to be cleaned and 8 magnetos to be attended to, while the petrol consumption is at the rate of approximately one gallon per minute.
