Michael Schumacher stretches his title lead with a win at the French GP, then gets disqualified from the British. Williams newcomer Damon Hill wins at Silverstone (above), thus achieving something his father Graham never did: a British GP victory.

1984:

Nelson Piquet triumphs at Montreal and Detroit for Brabham, but Keke Rosberg is the man of the moment in searing Dallas (above), winning for Williams as the track breaks up. Stig Blomqvist and Audi claim the spoils on the Rally of New Zealand.

1974:

Niki Lauda leads every lap of the Dutch GP for Ferrari (above), but has to settle for second behind the dominant Lotus of Ronnie Peterson in the French GP at Dijon. Matra claims its fifth straight sportscar victory, this time at the Osterreichring

1954:

Mercedes makes its world championship return and stars at Reims, with Fangio and Kling (above) finishing first and second in their streamliners. Ken Wharton and Peter Whitehead share the winning Jaguar in the supporting 12-hour sportscar race.

1929:

Alfa Romeo fills the first three places in the Belgian GP, a 24-hour event at Spa hit by dreadful night-time conditions; Benoist and Marinoni share the winning car. Second at Spa, Ivanowski (above) bounces back to win the Irish GP at Phoenix Park
