John Burton’s Chevron B26 and the Lola T222 of Peter Schleifer took a victory apiece when the Orwell Supersports Cup ran at Magny-Cours, home of the French Grand Prix, in late May. Burton won the opener by less than a second from the B19 of MSA chairman John Grant, before Schleifer won the second easily after the Chevrons tangled.

Porsche 911 man Dessie Nutt maintained his unbeaten run in the historic section of the Armajaro MSA British Historic Rally Championship on the Mutiny Historic Rally in Wales. A minute spent stuck on an earth bank cost Ray Bellm (Escort Mkl) victory in the post-historic class as David Stokes (Escort) stormed to his first victory of the season.

The gravel roads of the Dunedin region of New Zealand again hosted the Otago Classic Rally. This year’s big name was Juha Kankkunen aboard an Escort RS1800, but he had to settle for second behind Pasi Hagstrom (right). It was Hagstrom’s first event without pace notes! Rod Millen’s Mazda RX7 was the only non-Mk2 Escort in the top six.
