Mike Keegan

This one-time owner of Hawke Racing Cars has died, aged 78. A successful businessman, primarily in the aviation industry, he was also a motor racing enthusiast who backed his son Rupert’s path through to Formula One.

Keegan Snr bought Formula Ford chassis manufacturer Hawke in 1974. Besides Rupert, the cars were also raced by Nigel Mansell, Derek Warwick and Derek Daly, while a young Adrian Reynard was the firm’s engineer — even designing a stillborn Hawke F1 car.

The boss of Historic preparation company McDonald Racing lost his battle against cancer at the end of May.

He started with Brabham and later worked as a race engineer at McLaren, Fittipaldi and Wolf. He then turned his skills to rebuilding classic cars, most notably the Eagle that was raced recently by Ben Liebert.
