Proof negative

As usual, WB has given an interesting and detailed article in the June issue. His piece Wolverhampton Wanderers reminded me, as so often, of forgotten details, in this instance just how close K L Guinness came to making it a crushing 1-2-3 for Sunbeams, and just how fancied René Thomas was for the race; driving the V12 Delage, and with an Indy 500 win, Land Speed Record, etc under his belt, he must have been ‘The Man’.

Sadly, however, one small criticism. WB has surely been let down by proof-reading. In his penultimate paragraph he says, “It was not until Jim Clark won in a Lotus at Reims in 1963 that a British driver again won a French Grand Prix”.

What of Peter Collins in 1956, and Mike Hawthorn in ’53 and ’58? I am guessing that WB’s original wording had “in a British car” inserted in there, Peter and Mike’s successes being, of course, with Ferrari and Lancia-Ferrari mounts.

I have this month achieved a small ambition — I am in a photograph featured in Motor Sport. I was in the tribune shown in the Peugeot refuelling fire from Le Mans 1991 (p44). I have a picture of the flames taken from exactly the reverse angle — so I must be in that seething throng somewhere!
