Group C revival & Int. Sportscar Cup, Spa
The combination of win Percy and Don Law’s Jaguar XJR-16 proved much too rapid for the rest of the Group C Revival field during the second meeting of the season at Spa-Francorchamps in mid-May. By the end of 15 laps, Percy’s lead in the former IMSA car was close to a lap, although that margin was boosted by the retirement of several leading contenders.
Former C2 World Champion Nick Adams retired his Spice SE88C and Phillipp Brunn had a puncture in his 956 and dropped to fourth after a pitstop. Through to second came Chris Randall’s Spice SE88C, ahead of John Grant’s hard-driven Chevron B19 interloper.
The same meeting included a pair of races to open the International Supersports Cup and provided wins for Stafford-based team-mates Richard Dodldns and Nigel Barrett. Dodkins blasted his monstrous March 717 to victory in the opening race, while Barrett took the second race in the team’s McLaren M8D. Topping the 2-litre cars were Alan van der Merwe (Chevron B19), Silvio Kalb (March 76S) and John Burton (B19). Jon Minshaw and Martin Stretton started the fomaer’s E-type from pole in the one-hour Renaissance GT/Touring Car race, but a safety car period cost them dear as Grahame Bryant and Rob Wells won in a Morgan Plus 8.
