A Zambian Discovery

John Pulford, curator of collections at the Brooklands Museum, has pulled off a scoop for the Museum and its magazine Spirit by flying to Zambia to visit the home of the late Sir Stewart Gore-Browne, son of Ethel Locke-King’s brother, who knew the Track in its early days and raced some of Mrs Locke-King’s cars. His beautiful house by ‘The Lake of the Royal Crocodiles’ at Shira Ng’andu still stands. Sir Stewart, who was knighted in 1945, spoke out against colonial rule, and was a friend of Kenneth Kaunda. He died in 1967, aged 84. Pulford brought back remarkable photographs of the Locke-King family and some of the diaries which should contain references to the race track.

I met Gore-Browne briefly at a club race meeting in the ’50s. He was on holiday from Africa and drove an open 4 1/2-litre Bentley, probably on loan. I wonder whose it was?
