Mercedes-Benz’s tribute to Dick Seaman, in which John Surtees demonstrated a W154 Grand Prix car and John Watson and Mario Haberfeld drove the 1994 Indy 500-winning Penske PC23 and F1 McLaren MP4/13 respectively, brought record crowds to the VSCC’s event at Donington on May 23.

Spectators were enraptured by the crackle of the W154, like that in which Seaman finished third in the Donington Grand Prix 60 years ago. Then they sat back to enjoy a splendid racing programme headlined by the Pre-War Seaman Trophy feature.

Dominated by ERAs, as so often the case, it was won by David Morris in R11B. John Ure (R9B), Tony Stephens in David R1 28 and Julian Bronson in R14B chased Morris home.

Tim Llewellyn’s Bentley took Vintage Seaman honours, while Spencer Flack won the Ron Flockhart Memorial race for post-War cars in his pacy Lotus 16.
