DSJ: objective observer?

Sir,

I refer to recent correspondence concerning the late Denis Jenkinson. I, like many other readers seem to have taken to reading MOTOR SPORT at the age of 12. At that time any article with the letters DSJ at the bottom was always the first to be read. Forty years on I think his appeal lay in his ‘enthusiastic uncle’ style of writing. However on reflection I don’t think this style was always as objective as it might have been. On too many occasions he let heart rule head, and some of what he wrote was in no way impartial, particularly during the days when Jackie Stewart campaigned for better safety measures at circuits.

I believe it is too easy to look through rose tinted spectacles and raise the standard of his articles, forgetting the content was penned by an enthusiast as opposed to a consummate professional.

I am, yours, etc. Philip T Cracknell, Ripley, Derbyshire
