One week after the Curborough speed trials the VSCC held its annual speed hillclimb at Wiscombe, the picturesque and sinuous Devon course. Spollon’s ERA R8C was again in fine fettle, setting FTD in 47.63s to Day’s 47.66s in the “oversize” ERA R14B, with Giles in the vintage FN-GN quicker than Morris’s ERA RI 1B, by 48.38s to the blown ERA’s 48.56s.

The smallest sports car class was won by Rides’s Riley (56.57s). The vintage winner Owen’s effective Morris with vee-twin 1AP engine set 58.10s on its first run, when most drivers were better at their second attempts. Of the 11/2-litre road-goers, Howatt’s Morgan 4/4 scored 51.93s, best vintage car being Robert’s 1927 Frazer Nash (52.49s). Best of the three-litre sports cars was Guy Spollon’s Riley 2500 Special which, With a climb in 51.81s, broke the class record. Moreover, the vintage equivalent, fell to Giles, who got the AC/FN up in 52.21s. The class for the biggest of the sports cars saw Sparrowhawk’s impressive 4.3 Alvis Special clock 50.97s, which beat Felton’s blown 2.9 Alfa Romeo by the narrowest of margins — 0.01s! Vintage honours „here went to Biggins’s 30/98 Vauxhall Special (56.72s), which did well to vanquish two 41/2-litre Bentleys. Four Edwardians turned out.
