Vauxhall Villiers

The Vauxhall Villiers of the late Tony Brooke will now be campaigned by Julian Ghosh. It is being wrongly stated that by 1936 this ex-Raymond Mays car was being driven by the pioneer Brooklands racing motorist Sydney G Cummings. In fact, by then Sydney Cummings would have been nearing his 60s and might have found the powerful and temperamental Vauxhall Villiers a bit of a handful. He had raced Cummicar and Scar cars before WWI. He then finished third in a 1921 BARC race and competed at Kop in 1922 with a pre-war Coupe de lAuto Sunbeam, and won an ‘Old Timers’ race for MG Magnas at Brooklands, but by then generally left racing to his successful and versatile daughter, Ivy. It was Sydney Cummings’ son, Sid E Cummings, who took over the Vauxhall in its later pre-war days, when for many years his father had been a prominent official at Brooklands and elsewhere. W B
