Dundrod retrospective

Between August 2nd and 10th, the Ulster Automobile Club is organising a estival of motorsport to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the last motor race to be held on the Dundrod road circuit, the 1955 Tourist Trophy. Stirling Moss, who won that race, will be present with, it is hoped, a Mercedes-Benz 300SLR, and also in hand will be Desmond Titterington who hounded Moss in a D-Type Jaguar.

Some fatal accidents during that race caused Dundrod to be excluded to cars, though motorcycles still race there. It is a magnificent circuit and I was recently driven around it by former Circuit of Ireland Rally winner, Adrian Boyd, in a Renault Alpine.

The organisers are still anxious to hear from any drivers or owners of cars which raced on Dundrod or, even, owners of cars from the early Fifties of the sort which were eligible to have raced there. Special discounts have been arranged with hotel and ferry companies to assist participants who should contact the UAC, in the person of Rodney McComb, at 3a, Botanic Avenue, Belfast.

A full schedule of events has been arranged which takes in a British National Hillclimb at Craigantlet. a race meeting at Kirkistown, a sprint event, a Concours D’Elegance, various social outings and the Dundrod Retrospective itself. The UAC is an extremely friendly bunch and any enthusiast will enjoy all, or even part of, the club’s schedule. Be warned, however, the Irish reputation for hospitality is not understated. — M.L.
