Opportunity to Fly in Famous Historic Aeroplanes

display_5689f27b5a

On Sunday July 12th there will be an unrepeatable opportunity at Old Warden Aerodrome, the home of the Shuttleworth Collection, to fly in several well-known historic aircraft of de Havilland origin. All these machines were in regular daily use in the thirties and a few extended their service into the immediate post-war years.

Prices for these special flights will range from £15 for a seat in the Dragon Rapide to £75 for a flight in the Dragonfly. Tickets will be available on the day, or details and advance booking forms may be obtained by writing to the Displays Office, The Shuttleworth Collection, at Old Warden Aerodrome, Near Biggleswade, Beds.

The owners of these aircraft are providing this facility at no charge and therefore at considerable cost to themselves; all the receipts will be paid into the Shuttleworth Collection’s special appeal for a new hangar for de Havilland aeroplanes that will be built at Old Warden when sufficient money has been raised. This new building will form a basis for the de Havilland Flying Centre, where a representative range of de Havilland aircraft will be on public view every day and will be demonstrated in the air from time to time. In addition to the chances to fly in historic aeroplanes, visitors to Old Warden on this occasion will see a short flying display, comprising mainly aeroplanes of de Havilland design but including also the Percival Mew Gull of pre-war racing fame and the Supermarine Spitfire which should need no introduction to anyone! Most aircraft in the display are owned by members of the Air Squadron, which is an association of owners of unusual aircraft who meet to share their common interest.

Admission charges on July 12th will be £6 for a car and all occupants, or, for any adult who arrives on foot, bicycle or by bus or coach, the fee will be £1.50 (50 pence for a child). Members of the Shuttleworth Veteran Aeroplance Society, who normally have free admission, will be asked to pay these entry fees to help towards the appeal. – W.B.
