Cyril Williams

Sir,

How nice it was to see Mr. W. C. Clement’s letter in your April issue regarding Cyril Williams’s garage and his association with AJS. It seems that over the years memories of my grandfather’s exploits with the AJS team have been forgotten by the motor cycle fraternity in the Midlands, in particular his big win in the 1920 Junior T.T. when, after his motor cycle broek down, he pushed the machine 4 miles to the finish and still won. How times have changed, he was virtually ostracised by AJS for this as it was deemed to emphasize the unrealiability of the AJS machines. If Barry Sheene had pusehd his bike for 200 yards to win the British Grand Prix, he would be hailed as a demi god. The Isle of man official even went so far as to not award him the official winner’s trophy at the time

Unfortunately, The Cyril WIlliams garage has disappeared under the new Mander Centre Development in Wolverhampton and after the coimpany was taken over during the war by the Attwood Garage Group, the name of the company gradually faded away. My father still retains strong links within the Motor Trade although my interests are purely those of an enthusiast. As such, my family and I would be very interested to hear any further recollections Mr. Clements might have or indeed those of any other people, with any information on this era.

Wolverhampton, Charles Williams
