More "Hot-Rod" Gen!

Sir,

You questioned our measurements of our “Hot-Rod” courses after my previous letter. I have certified reports on our measured mile we used at our first annual Bonneville speed trials of 1949. Our course was a full measured mile, 5,280 ft ., surveyed by a Mr. Dale W. Jones, registered land surveyor of the State of Utah, U.S.A. His licence number was 1024.

Method of measurement was by a chromed steel chain. The temperature at the time of measurement was 65 degrees. The chain is standardised at 62 degrees. Measurements were taken in both directions under the observation of the Southern California Timing Association, Inc., Contest Board.

I can assure you our measurements are as accurate as humanly possible. As for our timer, it was checked before the time trials for 72 hours and the error was only 26 hundredths of a second, which it seems should remove any doubt as far as our measurements and timing.
