Sir,
With reference to your article “Busman’s Holiday”, Mr. M. W. L. Goodson, of Jedburgh, drove his C-type Aston Martin at St. Andrews last summer. The car, which has frequently competed in hill-climbs here in the north without much success (high gearing and heavy chassis?) really came into its own on the sand, coming in third in the 10-mile handicap out of 23 starters. Unfortunately it suffered from overheating in the 30-mile race, due no doubt to the headlamps being mounted directly in front of the radiator. The car itself is “off the road” at present having dropped a valve into one cylinder and bent its camshaft into the bargain. I notice in your advertisement columns several Lawrence flat-twin engines for sale. Having obtained one of these (£5 from a dealer, complete with charging plant), I wonder if any of your readers could enlighten me as to how to fit a clutch and gearbox or some type of motor-cycle sprocket to connect on to a motor-cycle gearbox. Personally I do not think it can be done except at phenomenal expense.
I am, Yours, etc,
TED PATERSON.
