CIRCUITS AND CHICANES The present season of motor-racing has seen the growth of a custom which is almost universally disliked by drivers and spectators alike. We refer to the use…
THE CORK RACE
Sir, I am a very enthusiastic reader of MOTOR SPORT, one of the only periodicals which deals with the sport correctly except in a few instances where technical errors are made. The ones I have in mind both refer to the Alta car. Firstly, on page 275 of your current issue you state that O’Boyle and Wilkinson were driving an Alf a whereas actually it was an Alta. Secondly you state on page 274 of the same issue that E. W. H. Dobson was third in the final of the Coronation Mountain Handicap, driving a Maserati. I think I am right in saying that J. H. Bartlett
was third on a Alta. I hope you do not repeatedly mix up
Britain’s most advanced design of racing car with a famous foreign marque which is now sadly enough declining from the supreme position it once held of being Europe’s most successful racing-car. For the benefit of the uninitiated, the latest Alta racing-cars, I might point out, embody among several other unique qualities the following advanced features of design :— An engine weighing only 296 lb. ;
extremely efficient combustion chambers in a very advanced type of cylinderhead ; nitralloy steel crankshaft ; wet cylinder liners ; twin overhead chain driven camshafts ; and, if required, independent suspension all round of an individual and highly practical nature.
I should point out, perhaps, that I am not connected with the Alta firm in any way. I am, Yours, etc.,
An Alta enthusiast.
Birmingham.
