I.O.M. OUTBOARD MEETING

FIRST CONTEST FOR ” MOTOR SPORT” TROPHY.

T. HURSDAY. of T.T. week always finds the majority of the Island’s temporary population at a loose end, and in search of diversion to pass the time till the day of the Senior Race. It was, therefore an excellently chosen time for the Outboard motor boat meeting which the June Effort Committee, in conjunction with the Mersey District Speedboat Club, and the Lytham St. Annes Motor Boat Club, arranged under permit from the M.M.A.

The course was laid out in Douglas Bay and starting close in shore about a quarter of mile from the pier, came to a mark boat off the shore end of the pier, and from there to another mark off the famous “Castle of Refuge” in the middle of the Bay, whence it turned again inshore and to the start. The distance of the lap was one mile, and the conditions were excellent throughout the meeting. Proceedings opened, after a certain amount of delay, with the 350 c.c. solo class, which was won easily by Mr. H. A. Edwards, of the British Outboard Racing Club, piloting ” ‘Erb, ” a 347 c.c. Watermota engined craft. He also made the fastest lap of the meeting at a speed of 28.57 m.p.h. The 500 c.c. solo class was won by “Flying Cloud,” driven by Mr. J. Tinsley (Mersey District S.C.) and fitted with a 498 c.c. Dunelt engine. He also secured the cup presented by Mr. Foden for the

fastest time in a British engined boat. His speed over the five miles was 25 m.p.h. Second place fell to Mr. F. G. Dinsdale with the Johnson-engined “Miss Teespeed V.,” and third place went to the well known T.T. rider, Mr. K. Twemlow, using a Dunelt enginelon ” Letnit.” The chief event of the day, the 6-mile unlimited solo race for the MOTOR SPORT Challenge Cup resolved itself into a duel between the Johnson engined “Miss Teespeed V” and the Dunelt engined ” Lemit ” of Kenneth Twemlow, and was eventually won by the former, driven again by Mr. F. G. Dinsdale.

It is interesting to note that the Johnson engine which won this trophy was of only 347 c.c. and showed a remarkable performance for its size.

Mr. K. Twemlow won the unlimited passenger class with ” Lemit ” and so secured a first, a second, andra third at the meeting.

In spite of some delays, which will doubtless be avoided on another occasion, the meeting was of great interest, and we hope to see a repetition of the event in future seasons.

Mr. Kaye Don, whose racing career started on motorcycles, and who must therefore have many reasons for interest in the Isle of Man, acted as Judge at this meeting, and later distributed the prizes.
