Peugeot will return to the Le Mans 24 Hours for the first time since 2011 after confirming that it is working on an entry into the World Endurance Championship’s forthcoming Hypercar category for 2022.
The French firm is planning to create a hybrid-powered prototype for the new class, which aims to bring sports car racing back into the scope of road relevance. Peugeot will likely line up against Toyota and Aston Martin in the new class.
Further details are set to be revealed in early 2020, and both Rebellion Racing and ORECA have been touted as partners for the project. ORECA assisted Peugeot’s last entry – the diesel-engined 908 HDI FAP LMP1, which won Le Mans in 2009.
PSA Motorsport chairman Jean-Marc Finot said: “It is a new challenge, but I know our team of experts will rise to it.”
The news comes as the PSA Group’s other major brand – Citroen – is said to be nearing the end of its World Rally Championship programme after three middling years with its C3 WRC challenger.
